Well as the week wore on the forecast got worse. Seven of us braved the elements....and at times it was really grim, especially where Mart had his puncture, coldest I've been for a long time. That was the low point, but there were some great moments, staying upright on nadgery descents and seeing Tim get to grips with the Orange 5.

We retired to The Crag for a well -deserved pint and pork sandwich.

Thanks to Ade for sorting the route for the day,Craig for transport duties ,Mick,Tim and Yorkie Dave for making the effort on such a foul day.

As Ade said,We won't forget it.

A Quick Release Holidays (AQR) is holding a Mountain Bike Skills course at Hanchurch woods on Saturday 5th Dec. This company has been running skills courses at Sherwood Pines for 5 years now, and will be trying out a new location on 5th Dec. Courses are not for absolute beginners, but rather for those who have been riding for a little while, and want to improve their technique. We regularly have guests who have been riding for several years, and all benefit from the opportunity to spend a day concentrating on their skills rather than fitness.

The usual price is a very reasonable £35 for a one-day course, but for this one-off date, we are offering it to Goldtech club members for £25. For full details, please email me on jon@aquickrelease.com

We set off bright and early on the Sunday morning. I'd promised a dry day in the Lakes, which looked less and less likely as we headed up the M6. However, when we arrived at the Hut it was fine.

The first climb of the day is an absolute bastard,so much so,that even decent climbers have to hop off and push.....or carry......and then there's the descent on the other side, steep, sketchy and some tyre-wrecking rain gutters. Dom was the unlucky one this time, suffering the same fate as me on our last visit. 2 punctures before he'd reached the bottom. Tedious!

Irritant Dibberes was the next to come unstuck.Wrecking a rear tyre when he was showing -off his skidding skills. In fairness it was inspired bodging that got him back on the trail.

A brisk climb(slog) took us to some technical singletrack that ran parallel to the river.Thakfully the cafe was open at Whatenlaf (sp?) where we stopped for a much-needed brew and cakes.

The climb from the cafe is steep and rocky...so most of us pushed. The drop on the other side is quite challenging. Nutmeg came to grief, clobbering his collar bone.

The next few miles passed relatively incident free...Kev fell off going up hill.....and then it was onto the descent into Grange!!! Carnage again!! Most of us had made it to the gate unscathed and were watching the remaining riders make their way down. Daz had safely negotiated all the nasty stuff, when his front wheel tucked-under throwing him to the ground. Alison fell in sympathy almost at the same time. Daz looked to be in pain, thankfully Alison was ok. Richard and Jim patched Daz up.

The rest of the ride went well.It was good to get back to the Hut.

Day 2,we rode over to Whinlatter in glorious sunshine, although there was a heavy frost. A quick spin around the North Trail and an enjoyable spin back to base.Had a swill in the stream,a brew ,bite to eat and then the drive home.

Thanks to Richard for sorting the Hut. To Craig for transporting me and Kev. And to everbody else for being great company.

Looking forward to our next trip.

This report was brought to you by Young Dave Riley.

Cheers for a great ride daz, it took in all of my favourate ups and downs in the castleton area, and was a proper length too. I always go through rides on google earth after more out of interest than anything but the route measured over 41km and that was the min. The weather and the trails could not have been better and i had never seen so much dust up there. Loved it. Ps nice to meet Alison too.

Jim

not so soon for me boss! Never going to get 2 Sundays (full days) past the Mrs. I'm definitely up for another Peaks adventure.

Extremo, stick at it and you will get there. It is tough going up there,we were all suffering at the end, even Daz. Deano went a very perculiar colour......and try to imagine what Andy"Iron Arse"Apollo's backside felt like!!! A fine effort on a hard tail.

Cheers guys for a great ride and to Daz for posting; nice to meet Alison. There was some good riding on this route and the trails were really dry. Stick at it Extremo, the more you do the better you'll get in both fittness and skills. A bit of STEALTH RUBBER might be an idea on the next ride to help you stay upright. Did'nt want to go home with the trails being so dry. After droping back into Hope and recharging with some soup at the cafe with Russ I went up Pin Dale and across to finish the ride with a top descent down Cave Dale. Not many walkers about at the time of day either. Finshed off a top day with a cream team in Castleton. One day I'll grow up...............................................not yet though!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What a day! Daz,Alison,Extremo,Pikie,Andy,Deano, jim and myself set off from Mam Tor and did a whirlwind tour of some tasty climbs and descents.

For me this is proper mountain biking, struggling up climbs and scaring yourself on the descents. We all escaped without any proper crashes,or mechanicals.

The poor lad with the smashed face was a sobering reminder of what can happen when things go tits up in the Peaks.

One of my favourite moments of the day was at the bottom of a descent. We were waiting for Extremo.....and here he comes...with a look of sheer terror on his face.

Many thanks to Daz for another great day. Alison is a human dynamo, never faltering, listening to her drum n bass ,whilst playing tetris on her gps.
